Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) Q: What stages of completion do you offer? A: We offer three separate stages: 1) The "deluxe pre-assembled body package", which is one of the most complete kits available today. This stage can be assembled by the end user in as little as one short weekend. 2) The "roller" package, which is ready to accept the engine of your choice. 3) The "turn-key" package. Although Special Edition, Inc. DOES NOT directly supply engines or transaxles, it is still possible for the customer to receive a ready to drive speedster. Q: What type of engine can I use? A: Our BECK SPEEDSTER, BECK SPYDER, BECK ROADSTER, are all available with air cooled or water cooled engines. The BECK GTS was designed for an aircooled flat 6. Q: Are there any other engine types that will work? A: Our customers have also used several vintage air-cooled 4cyl engines, VW waterboxer, and the Subaru EJ series of engines. Q: What are the most popular engines? A: While the water-cooled engine are beginning to become more popular, the 90hp, 1915cc VW type I engine still remains the most popular, providing an excellent combination of power and economy.
Q: What is the biggest engine I can use? A: The engine size/hp is limited only by budget and sanity. Our shop car boasts nearly 200hp and is what I would consider "overkill". When selecting an engine, one must remember a few things: 1) These cars are light and nimble. They do not require huge HP and, 2) the BECK Speedster, BECK Spyder, Beck Roadster have the aerodynamic qualities of a classic 50's sportscar. The BECK GTS is a different animal. Best to contact us directly for recommendations. Q: I've seen other companies that offer a tubular frame vs.. the VW bellypan. How is yours different? A: The Beck Speedster, Beck Spyder and Beck Roadster use .120" wall thickness x 3" diameter DOM round tubular steel. There are several reasons why it is important that we use DOM round tubing rather than square tubing:
- DOM tubing has a higher yield and tensile strength that aswelded steel. It is also smoother, cleaner, more dense and more consistent.
- Round tubing is lighter than square tubing, yet has greater strength characteristics.
- Round tubing is more expensive than square tubing.
- Round tubing is available in higher grade steel than square tubing.
- All of this translates into the lightest, strongest ladder frame possible.
Q: How do I insure my Beck®? A: If your current carrier does not have the ability to insure your new vehicle, there are several companies that specialize in insuring component vehicles. Hagerty comes highly recommended and can be contacted at 1-800-922-4050 (or www.hagerty.com). Q: How do I register my Beck®? A: Registration is not federally regulated, so it varies from state to state. You will need to check with your local BMV for your state's requirements. However, Beck products have been successfully registered in all 50 states. Q: Does the Beck® come with a warranty? A: Yes! We offer a 12 month/12,000 mile limited warranty. This covers your Speedster's contents and workmanship. The drive train components, as well as a few of our optional components, are warrantied directly by their respective manufacturers. Q: How do the Beck ® products hold up in resale value? A: We have seen our products hold their value VERY well over the last 30+ years. According to the Kelly Blue Book, the average car loses 65% of it's value in the first 5 years. We have seen our products sell as high as 100%-120% of their original value, 10 years down the road! Q: Do you offer financing? A: Financing can be obtained through J.J. Best Banc & Co. 1-800-USA-1965 (or on the web at www.jjbest.com).
